Engagement

pixelfountain learning-simulations provide an excellent way to engage with the wider community.

For example, the Liverpool Partnership Group contacted us to help them deliver an engagement programme as part of the development of the Local Area Agreement.

Local Area Agreement workshop with Liverpool partnership group

During October 2006, 100 delegates played the Regen-IT learning-simulation in 6 very enjoyable evening workshops

“Very enjoyable, if only life was this nice!”

After an initial presentation on Local Area Agreements, the delegates were split into 6 sub teams to play the Regen-IT learning-simulation. Regen-IT is an example of games based learning and considers real issues involved in developing sustainable communities.

Based upon national, regional and local data, the learning-simulation (computer-based resource management model) requires the delegates to develop solutions for a ‘Borough’, considering competing agendas/trade-offs and seeking win-win-win solutions.

“I found this session really interesting and would have liked more time. As the game progressed I realised the importance of talking with other groups to meet targets, I wish I had understood this at the beginning – I learnt a lot.”

Alongside the learning-simulation, the facilitators captured the delegates’ thoughts about their real neighbourhoods. The virtual experience allowed the delegates to see the big picture and put forward practical and joined-up solutions.

The approach is a very interactive form of engagement that allows everyone to participate on an equal level. The pluralism (human-centered) that is at the heart of the learning approach enhances the engagement process.

“Enjoyed opportunity to work in group exercise with wide variety of people who I don’t usually come into contact with on a day to day work basis”

Events

learning-simulations with their high level of engagement, multiplayer format, drama and competitive element lend themselves to events. They offer something different to yet another PowerPoint presentation. Multiple workshops can be delivered in the event (10 workshops in one day is our current record) with the delegates coming back together in a plenary session.

Team Building

pixelfountain learning-simulations provide an excellent way for teams to work in a controlled environment on a meaningful exercise. The delegates can investigate strategies and decision making while working collaboratively towards a common goal. The simulation is removed from the day-to-day working lives of the delegate, so it allows the delegates to see the world from a different perspective. But, the exercise still relates to work activities, so the delegates can contextualise the learning and more easily build upon it back on the job.

“Direct relevance to area of work, Interactive learning
rather than lecture style.”

Our large programmes have improved long-term collaboration and partnership working *, but we have also specifically delivered team building events:

What we inspire:
When asked what they have taken from the day, delegates typically respond with commitments to: collaboration (35%), joined-up thinking (35%), improving performance (20%) and strategic thinking (10%). People get to see the whole machine, and not just the next cog. The delegates get to enjoy themselves working in motivating and engaging environment that builds confidence and enthusiasm.

“I will have a more holistic approach to my work.”

* Evaluation of our Planit-nw programme (12 months on) has found 67% of delegates have experienced an improvement in their decision-making and working relationships.
