Revolt (Learning Simulations in Education)

The idea that games (serious games/games based learning) can support learning in schools is becoming widely acknowledged.

The Need

In discussions with United Utilities, pixelfountain had identified a need to educate young people about the issue of renewable energy. pixelfountain teamed up with RenewablesNW and gained funding from the Dti and Government Office for the NW to develop an innovative way to engage young people in a classroom environment.

The Solution

pixelfountain designed and developed a Learning Simulation (REvolt). The students need to find sites that are technically suitable and where the local population are not against renewables. They then go on to purchase a scheme, engage with the community and consider the environment before finally putting the scheme forward for planning approval. This process is repeated over a number of rounds with a view to meeting a 10% renewable target and more importantly a high score.

The Outcome

The programme was delivered to 306 children from 9 schools, as well as 12 teachers who now feel

confident to run a similar lesson using the software. We were very pleased with the overall positive reception given to the Learning Simulation at all the schools we visited amongst both pupils and teachers, showing an overall consensus that a significant majority of students had learnt something new about renewable energy and had enjoyed the game.

Benefits

Creating this level of motivation within the National Curriculum framework is of great value in classrooms.

Other pixelfountain Learning Simulations in Education

We have also successfully used our “adult” learning simulations in education. We have run classes in schools and Further Education Colleges (including inter college events). Also, we have delivered Fresher Week events alongside lecturers at Sheffield Hallam University. We have also provided consultancy to other private sector companies looking at learning games in education.

South Sefton Learning Centre

Towards the end of last year the CLC started looking at different ways we could support our partner schools in delivering 'Enterprise Days' Two very successful days were held with different themes, one a science theme and the other with an ICT / Gaming theme. We can now offer these to all our schools. In addition we are receiving training to deliver [pixelfountain's] Planit-Sustainability simulation, this offers a new dimension of citizenship to enterprise. “ - Source

“
Really enjoyed the game. Many pupils wanted to play on at lunchtime and some have asked if they can access it from home.
