Workshop Delivery

planitWASTE is delivered as the core of a interactive Workshop, which covers all aspects of Waste Management using a range of non-computer activities as well as the Learning Simulation itself.

The workshop breakdown
The workshop begins with a Waste introduction providing orientation and background. This is followed by a local introduction providing the local context for planitWASTE.

The first excercise is then introduced, The ‘Pub Quiz’ which gets delegates working together and introduces waste management and its terminology.

The 2nd excercise then begins, playing the simulation which allows delegates to explore the problem of sustainable waste management in a virtual county.

Exercise 3: To conclude a facilitated discussion or planning excercise is used to brainstorm problems and solutions.

The Learning Simulation simulates 10 years (over 4 rounds) in the life of the local area. Target years are simulated to take account of the new policy and legal framework.

Delegates play one of five teams, 3 WCA's, a WDA and Waste Industries. The Teams are responsible for improving the waste management of the virtual area.

They are able to work together and benefit from pooling resources and economies of scale. This includes action planning for the partnership, this translates the learning into tangible actions to improve the waste management of the area.

If delegates want to achieve that goal of sustainable waste management, they have to negotiate, work together, consider the wider community and think strategically.

Partnership Working

In planitWASTE If teams work in partnership towards a common goal they are more successful. Teams have the options of pooling targets and budgets and working together to tackle the issues. If teams choose to work together they will allow economies of scale (e.g. cost of collection services) and working together can help attract markets. Two men holding a cup

WASTE

The interrelationship between WDA and WCA is very important, they are judged as an area on total waste arising rather than individual waste arising. For example, if a WCA starts a kerbside collection scheme it will probably reduce the waste recycled from the WDA sites. However the overall amount of waste recycled could be higher.

”Partnership working = very important!”
