PlanitWASTE is a workshop centered around a highly interactive learning-simulation (training tool). It was developed in partnership with DEFRA to help local areas tackle their serious waste problems and raise awareness of the serious waste management problems facing us over the next 5-15 years. The project was originally funded as a North West pilot, planitWASTE is now being used by other regions with great success.

The UK produces around 330 million tonnes of waste annually - a quarter of which is from households and business. The cost of waste disposal is a major problem for Local Authorities. Waste costs and Government imposed penalties are increasing.

The public and private sector need to come up with radical solutions to resolve these issues.

The learning solution needed to look at waste in terms of the big picture. Waste is not simply a technical or an economic problem. It cannot be isolated from social problems and certainly not environmental issues.

Waste needs to be thought of in terms of sustainability.
planitWASTE focuses on improving long term decision making and partnership building particularly between Local Authorities, Waste Collection Authorities (WCA) and Waste Disposal Authorities (WDA).

Crucially, planitWASTE is linked to the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATs) and focuses on improved performance for Local authorities and their partners involved in waste management.
